Exhibition - African Workplaces

Nine researchers, photographers and video-makers from France, Burundi, Kenya and the Comoros were invited to share their views on their professional practice of work photography in East Africa (Ethiopia, Union of the Comoros, Burundi, Kenya and Tanzania). While work in Africa had been relegated to the background in French-language research since the late 1990s, these images bear witness to the renewed interest and diversity of views on work that this exhibition seeks to highlight. Three areas invite visitors to explore these different perspectives, focusing on small-scale urban trades, plantations and industrialisation.

The exhibition was hosted in Africa in 2021-2022 in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Bujumbura (Burundi), Nairobi (Kenya), Dar Es Salaam and Arusha (Tanzania). It is also touring Europe: Villetaneuse (2022), Toulouse (2022), Poitiers (2023), Bordeaux (2023) and Liège (2024).
